Answer Engine Optimization (AEO): How to Get Your Business Cited by AI
AI answer engines now decide which businesses get mentioned. Here is how to structure your content so they can find it, understand it, and cite you.

Your next customer may never see your website. They'll ask ChatGPT, Gemini, or Google a question, read one AI-written answer, and make a decision. If your business isn't in that answer, you weren't in the running.
That's why Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is no longer optional. Ranking on page one still matters. But the new prize is being the source the AI quotes.
Quick answer: To get cited by AI, publish content that answers real questions clearly — one-sentence definitions, real numbers, tight lists, and FAQs — on a site that's already fast, crawlable, and trusted.
What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so AI-powered answer engines can find it, understand it, and cite it as a source.
Answer engines include Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Copilot. Instead of ten blue links, they return one answer — and credit a handful of sources along the way.
AEO vs. SEO: what's the difference?
SEO earns a ranking. AEO earns a citation. They aren't rivals. Google says its AI features are rooted in the same core ranking systems as regular Search, so strong SEO is still the foundation. AEO is the layer on top: content shaped so a machine can lift a clean answer from it.
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank on page one | Get quoted in the answer |
| Unit of competition | The whole page | A single passage |
| Win metric | Clicks and rankings | Citations and brand mentions |
| Content style | Comprehensive | Clear and self-contained |
Why does AEO matter now?
AI answers are now the front door to search. By the numbers:
- 2.5 billion people use Google AI Overviews every month, and 1 billion+ use AI Mode (Google, I/O 2026).
- 900 million people used ChatGPT every week as of February 2026 (OpenAI via Search Engine Land, Feb. 2026).
- 8% vs. 15%: Google users clicked a traditional result about half as often when an AI summary appeared (Pew Research Center, 2025).
- 35% higher organic click-through rate for brands cited inside a Google AI Overview vs. brands left out (Seer Interactive, Q3 2025).
Clicks are shrinking overall. But brands that get cited keep a bigger share of what's left. (Seer notes this is a correlation, not proof of cause.) Either way, being the source is the new page one.
What is a citation hook?
A citation hook is a short, self-contained passage — a definition, a statistic, a list, or a Q&A — that an AI system can quote without needing the rest of the page.
Think of citation hooks as the sound bites of your content. Place one every 150–200 words, so wherever an answer engine lands on the page, there's something clean to cite.
The three most reliable hooks:
- One-sentence definitions. Answer "What is X?" in the first sentence under the heading, and bold it.
- Stat blocks. A specific number, what it measures, who measured it, and when.
- Mini-FAQs. A real customer question as a heading, answered in two or three sentences right below it.
Research backs the stat block. A study from Princeton researchers and partners, presented at KDD 2024, found that optimization methods — with adding statistics, quotations, and source citations among the strongest — boosted a source's visibility in generative engine answers by up to 40% (Aggarwal et al.).
How should you format content for AI answers?
Write for a busy reader first. The formatting that helps someone skimming on a phone is the same formatting that makes a passage easy to quote.
- Keep paragraphs to about 80 words or less. One idea per paragraph, so any paragraph can stand alone.
- Use concise lists of 3–6 items. Long enough to be useful, short enough to lift whole.
- Turn headings into questions. Match how people actually ask: "How much does a corporate video cost?"
- Lead with the answer. Direct answer first, context second.
- Be specific. Real numbers, places, and dates beat "many" and "recently."
A quick reality check: Google says it doesn't require "chunking" content into tiny pieces for its AI features (Google Search Central). Treat these rules as clarity habits, not hacks. Clear writing wins with people and with every AI system.
Do you need FAQ schema for AEO?
FAQ schema (FAQPage markup) is structured data that labels each question and answer on a page so machines can read the structure directly. It helps — but set the right expectations.
- Use
FAQPagefor Q&As your business writes, like the FAQ on a service page. - Use
QAPageonly when users submit answers to a single question, like a forum thread. - Know what changed: Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026 (Google Search Central), and says no special markup is required for its AI features.
- Why it's still worth it:
FAQPageremains valid schema.org markup, costs little to add, and gives any system that reads it an explicit map of your questions and answers.
The bottom line: schema supports great content. It can't replace it.
How does video help you get cited?
Video becomes a citation asset when it's paired with text an AI can read: a transcript, a summary, and a clear title.
Google's own guidance encourages high-quality images and video, noting its AI features can surface them alongside text. That's where a production partner matters. At Full Moon Creative, video and web live under one roof, so every piece ships ready to be found:
- Publish the full transcript on the same page as the video.
- Add a two- or three-sentence summary that answers the video's core question.
- Use
VideoObjectschema with a title, description, and upload date. - Break long videos into chapters named as questions.
AEO checklist: 6 steps to get cited
- List the 10–20 questions your customers ask most before they buy.
- Give each question a heading and a one-sentence answer right below it.
- Back every claim with a stat block: a sourced, dated number.
- Keep paragraphs short and lists to 3–6 items.
- Add
FAQPagemarkup to Q&A sections andVideoObjectmarkup to videos. - Track AI visibility in Google Search Console's generative AI performance report, and test your key questions in ChatGPT and Perplexity every month.
How does Full Moon Creative make content AEO-ready?
We turn the questions your customers ask into pages and video that answer them, then measure whether AI tools start citing you. It starts with a discovery call and an audit, becomes a written plan, and is produced by one in-house team, with monthly reporting against pipeline and ROI.
- Discovery call. A short, no-pressure conversation about what winning looks like for you. We reply within one business day to set it up.
- Question audit. We review how your site, business profiles, and structured data describe you today, then map the questions buyers ask that your pages don't answer yet.
- Written plan. Which pages to fix, which to build, and which answers need video, with clear deliverables before work begins.
- Pages and video from one team. Answer-first pages built for Core Web Vitals and schema, plus video our crew films for those answers, delivered in horizontal and vertical versions. Every edit includes two revision rounds, and you own the final videos outright.
- Monthly reporting. What moved, what didn't, and what's next, including how often your business shows up in AI answers.
